West Shore Chamber of Commerce

businessSPOTLIGHT: Safe Harbour

What services or products does your business offer?
Safe Harbour provides housing and supportive services for homeless and nearly homeless individuals and families to help them achieve independent living by improving their basic life skills.

How does your business separate itself from your competition?
Rather than separate ourselves, Safe Harbour works diligently to partner with other non-profit organizations that have complementary missions in assisting those in need.  We work with Carlisle CARES, Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland and Perry Counties, Project Share, and the Salvation Army of Carlisle.  Together, we have formed the Mission Partners to maximize our missions and our resources to better assist those in need of shelter and food.

We also have beneficial working relationships with New Opportunities for Affordable Housing (NOAH) and Family Promise of the Capital Region.

How do you see your business growing in the future?
Working in partnership with our Mission Partners, community benefit organizations, and governmental agencies, we will continue to identify housing options for low-income individuals and families.  Over the past five years, Safe Harbour has assisted more than 750 individuals with shelter and supportive services.  Our facilities have been and remain at capacity.

How does your business get involved in the community?
In addition to serving those in need in the community, Safe Harbour provides representatives to speak to churches, community groups, and schools about homelessness and poverty issues.  Safe Harbour also provides tours of our James Wilson Facility to anyone interested in learning more about our mission and our programs.  The tours are offered either during our Annual Open House in January or at a time convenient for individuals.  Finally, Safe Harbour participates in the United Way of Carlisle and Cumberland County’s Taking It to the Streets effort, which brings social services non-profit organizations and others to communities throughout Cumberland County to educate and raise awareness.

How long has your business been a member of the Chamber?
For more than 10 years.

How has Chamber membership been beneficial to your business?
As a member of WSCC, we have been able to raise awareness in the community about our mission and our programs.  We also have been able to share information about our success in helping those in need and to make others aware our need for support.

Safe Harbour is a not-for-profit organization that provides a continuum of housing services for the homeless of Cumberland County. For more information please contact, Scott K. Shewell, President & CEO at sshewell@safeharbour.org or visit safeharbour.org.
